30. Cornrow Chair
30. Cornrow Chair
Date: 2011
Dimensions: 36in x 20in x 20i
Medium: reupholstered found chair, embroidered with silk thread, braided and cornrowed
Description: Reupholstered in red velvet and ticking. The cloths are associated with sumptuousness and simplicity. The front legs of the chair are ornate. The back legs are practical. The chair was selected because it has awkward proportions. Silk threads are stitched into back of the chair and worked into cornrows that extend to roots. The chair could be read as a throne for CJ Walker or a reflection on the free labor that established the wealth of our nation.
