Description: Passing and No Passing are part of the Border Series inspired in part by Rebecca Solnit’s quotation: “There are two kinds of borders: those that limit where we can go and those that limit what people can do to us.” The series draws on the semiotics of road markings and the use of combs to separate, part, and order hair. Fine toothed combs, in particular, highlight hair texture as a racial signifier of who can pass for one race or another.
